where do our bedding
plants come from
Nearly all our annuals are grown right here in our own greenhouses. This is the surest way to ensure healthy, vigorous plants for you to take home to your garden. While most people are taking time off to be with family and friends at Christmas, we are already starting to seed the annuals for the following spring. |
Plants start as tiny seeds, some of which costs more than gold per ounce. The seed we use is coated so that it rolls better in our seeding machine. It is also more visible to the electronic sensors that move the seeding arm across the tray depositing one seed in every cell.

Once the trays are seeded they are brought into the greenhouse and watered. It will now take four to eight weeks before tiny plants start to show. Each one of these trays has 512 little seedlings. That amounts to about 85,000 plants per bench. Using these numbers it’s easy to see how we can boast a million plants. The seedlings will continue to grow in these “plug trays” until the roots are strong enough to move them into the next phase of production. |
Once large enough, seedlings such as impatiens will be transplanted into bedding flats of 48 plants. Others, like geraniums will go into 4” pots where they will continue to grow until they are ready to take home in May. |
